・仮定法表現。現在に関する仮定について述べる時は、if it were not for ~, 主語 would 動詞
・過去のことについて述べる場合はIf it hadn't been for ~, 主語 would have 過去分詞

・「～は役に立たない、価値がない」
・名詞のgoodには「役に立つこと」という意味があり、上のフレーズは「～は何の役に立つのか？」から「～は役に立たない」という意味になる
・What good is ~?に言い換えが可能
・It's no good ~ing.も「～しても無駄だ」
